International Conference: Beijing+30: Delivering for all women and girls

Since the 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995, the world has seen important progress in gender equality that has changed the lives of women and girls across the globe. While this is cause for celebration, the pushback is growing stronger.

Therefore, UN Women National Committee Germany, the Embassy of Canada to Germany, and the German Federal Foundation for Gender Equality have joined forces to review the progress since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and to provide a platform to discuss possible solutions for closing the remaining and new gaps.

UN Women’s report, which draws on feedback provided by 159 Governments to the UN Secretary-General, shows that nearly one in four countries is seeing a backlash against women’s rights and gender equality. To name just a few examples: Gender-based violence (GBV) is rising. The gender digital divide is widening. And over 600 million women and girls now live near conflict zones, while they continue to be excluded from peace negotiation tables.

This historic and precarious moment threatens to reverse hard-won gains. The progress achieved cannot be taken for granted. This year, we commemorate 30 years since the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, 25 years since Security Council Resolution 1325, and UN Women marks its 15th anniversary. It is the time for bold leadership and unwavering commitment to deliver on the promises made in the Sustainable Development Goals, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the Women, Peace and Security agenda, and the Pact for the Future.

We warmly invite you to join us at our International Conference “Beijing+30: Delivering for all women and girls” for an in-person discussion with national and international experts on October 14th, from 2-6.30 p.m. at the Embassy of Canada to Germany in Berlin. The conference language will be English.
